The Intelligent Outcome™
Have you ever set a goal that you didn’t achieve, or achieved a goal you didn’t really want? The problem isn’t you. It’s your goal-setting system. The Intelligent Outcome™ goes beyond S.M.A.R.T. goals to help you create objectives that pull (not push) you toward success.
Carol Goldsmith’s proprietary outcome model identifies six key success criteria, along with a set of corresponding questions that help satisfy those criteria.
To create an Intelligent Outcome, state your objective in writing (15 words or less). Now answer these intelligent questions:
1. Is this outcome stated in Positive terms?
Example: “I want a promotion” (positive) vs. “I don’t want to stay in this position.” (negative)
2. What is the Value of having this outcome?
What will it give you: fame, fortune, adulation? Choose the one thing you value most. Is achieving this outcome the best way to meet that need? If not, restate your outcome.
3. Is achieving this outcome within my Control?
If it isn’t, what is? Remember: You can’t control other people’s actions or emotions; only your own.
4. How will I Measure success?
What evidence will let you know you’ve succeeded? How will other people know? State your outcome in objective, quantifiable terms.
5. In what Explicit contexts do I want this outcome?
Where do you want this? By when? With whom? How often? The more explicit your outcome, the more likely you are to get it, and still want it afterwards.
6. Is this outcome Congruent with my ideals and identity?
How will having this outcome affect other people or parts of your life? Are the benefits worth the costs? Are there any reasons why you wouldn’t want this? It’s better to consider the ramifications before taking action.
Rewrite your outcome statement until it satisfies all six success criteria. You now have an Intelligent Outcome that you can — and will — achieve.
